Social Determinants of Crime by Toni-Lee Danso
Social Determinants of crime.
What are they?
Let's find out✨✨
What is known as a "Social Determinant of crime" can be explained as the framework or contributing factors to someone's offending behaviours. This can also be looked upon on a larger scale as well, meaning it could also be the factors/ contributors of a particular social group, race, or demographic's offending behaviours.
Some of these factors are: employment, status, education, accessibility, inclusivity, availability, and income.
Meaning all of these factors are sources which will be used to determine someones lifestyle habits, advancement, and advantages.
These ALSO mean that they will determine someone's lifestyle failures, demotion, and Disadvantages.
You can think of these as the "reasons" that persons commit crime. And it is not an excuse but rather a systemic issue that is further developing into a PUBLIC issue and affecting the populations of most provinces in Canada.
Most people who are found in situations where they have put their life at risk by committing crimes, will point to one of those social determinants as the answer to their "Why". And it is safe to say that there IS indeed a relationship between the popularity of these determinants and certain racial/social demographics.
Particularly low income, and less advantaged communities of people suffer the most in front of the courts DUE to lack of knowledge of these factors.
For example, systemic racism against particular groups of people are the social determinant behind INACCESSIBILITY, UNEMPLOYMENT, and INCOME.
Why?
Because they will not encourage or accept into schools or even hire "that many" people of a certain race and therefore increases POVERTY, diminishes their social status and Increases discrimination becuase NOW they are "the poor unemployed, uneducated people who live in low income housing"
Guess why? Because of the SYSTEMIC urge to seemingly delete those people from the success pool.
These sort of occurrences are a major social determinant of crime because it largely contributes to those who commit crimes in order to survive, earn, and try to maintain a half decent lifestyle.
Another thing. These same determinants are used when handing out a judgement or sentence to ANYONE who comes into the court system.
Of course there are many different factors that influence crime hence why they are called the Social Determinants of Crime but those exact factors ALSO determine your outcome, and how you are treated in all aspects of life as well as the healthcare system, justice system and even the education system and financial sector.
These determine ALOT. And the one thing they have in common: Discrimination
